Pandit Purushottam Madhavrao Walawalkar is acknowledged as one of India’s greatest artists in the genre of harmonium playing. The harrmonium replaced the Sarangi (Indian fiddel) in the early 20th century and went through tough times as it first was banned as accompanying instrument by A.I.R. (All India Radio).
Extra ordinary artists like Pandit Purushottam Walawalkar established the Harmonium even as solo instrument in Indian Classical music. Purushottam was born on 11th June, 1923 to Madhavrao and Parvathibai Walawalkar, in the town of Sawantwadi.
