61st Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav (12-15 Dec 2013)

PUNE: The prestigious Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, an Indian classical music festival, organized by Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal every year, would take place between December 12 and 15, this year at New English School, Ramanbaug grounds, a statement issued by Shriniwas Joshi, executive president of Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal already in October for Times of India. This is the 61st editoin of the festival started by late Pandit Bhimsen Joshi in the memory of his guru Sawai Gandharva.

The Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav, the biggest festival of classical music in India, organized every year by the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal which was founded by Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, shall take place between December 11th and 16th this year. Like the previous years this festival of music shall be organized at the New English School Raman Baug grounds.

The festival has been renamed as the ‘Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav’ since the last year after the demise of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. The festival was initially known as the ‘Sawai Gandharva Sangeet Mahotsav’.

“This being the 60th year of this mega music fest, which enjoys patronage of music lovers from all around the world, the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal has decided to hold it for 6 days in this particular year”, informed Shrinivas Joshi, Executive President, Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal.

Begum Parveen Sultana (born 10 July 1950) is an Assamese Hindustani classical singer of the Patiala Gharana.[1] She is among the foremost classical vocalists in India and is known as Queen of Classical Vocal. She was conferred the Padmashri in 1976, at the age of 25.

Parveen Sultana was born at Daccapatty in Nagaon city, Assam, India to Ikramul Mazid and Maroofa Begum. She went to Mission School .

Her father was her first guru and was very strict with her. She also received early training from her grandfather Mohammed Najeef Khan, a pathan. She later went to Kolkata to learn music under the guidance of late Pandit Chinmoy Lahiri and from 1973, she became a disciple of Ustad Dilshad Khan of the Patiala Gharana.

Parveen Sultana gave her first stage performance in 1962 when she was only 12 and has been recording music since 1965.

Sultana has sung for movies like Gadar, Kudrat, Do Boond Pani, and Pakeezah. Recently, she sang the theme song of Vikram Bhatt’s latest opus 1920.[2] She also sang Humein Tumse Pyaar Kitna – Kudrat 1981.

Parveen Sultana has recorded for HMV, Polydor, Music India, Bharat Records, Auvidis, Magnasound, Sonodisc, Amigo.
