Indian concert with Ravi Shankar and Kala Ramnath

The Residentie Orkest will feature a programme of Indian music during the ‘Seasons of India’ concert on Saturday, 10 November at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague.

The concert will feature two world-famous Indian soloists: violinist Kala Ramnath and sitar-player Ravi Shankar. The evening will feature a mix of Western and Indian music just prior to the celebrations for Diwali, the Hindu festival of light.

Kala Ramnath

Kala Ramnath, the absolute top among today’s generation of violinists in India, will be the featured soloist in her own violin concert. She is famous for her extremely refined emotional style. Ramnath has played at many international festivals worldwide and contributed to the musical score for the film ‘Blood Diamond’.
Ravi Shankar

Born in Varanasi, the so-called culture capital of India, 92-year-old Ravi Shankar is often described as the most well-known contemporary musician in India.

He spent his youth touring Europe and India with his brother’s dance group before giving up dancing to study the sitar. He worked first as a composer and later became music director of All India Radio in New Delhi.

In 1956 he toured Europe and America playing Indian classical music and increased his popularity in the 1960s through his association with George Harrison of The Beatles. Writing music and playing the sitar, Shankar toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. He was awarded India’s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, and received three Grammy Awards. Shankar still performs to this day, often in the company of his successful sitar-playing daughter Anoushka.

This concert is part of the Holland India Festivals The Hague.

Seasons of India’ will be performed on Saturday, 10 November at 20.15 hrs. at the Royal Conservatoire (Juliana van Stolberglaan 1).

Tickets cost € 25.00 per person (some discounts apply) and can be ordered by going to or by phoning tel. 070 880 03 33.
