A unique program is underway inside Fresno’s VA Hospital using music as a form of medicine.
Veterans are treated to live music in the waiting room several times a month.
Fresno has the highest percentage of Iraq and Afghanistan vets in the country and many of them suffer from post traumatic stress disorder.
Studies show music has healing power. “Certain people who hear the music, especially if it’s live music before they come to the appointment, they are more relaxed and able to focus,” said Dr. Hani Khouzam a psychiatrist at the VA hospital.
Musician Jon Sharp said, “Nobody wants to be in a hospital, so it’s very nice to come here and play for people who offer that kind of service to their country.”
The fastest growing population of veterans is currently women.
