3 artists from India…
Arun Ghosh | Rudresh Mahanthappa | Trilok Gurtu
-
Arun Ghosh (Clarinet) & Sextett
date: 29.05.2010beginning: 19:00 (07:00 pm)venue/stage: Museum Ship Cap San Diego
.
BBC-Worldwide-Guru Gilles Peterson counts himself among the legions of fans of this clarinetist with the unmistakable Indian roots. Expect urban Hip Hop sounds, raga-ing Tabla-rhythms, even a surprising tendency towards rock or ambient-music. Swing or Klezmer? Dub-Reggae or bold Avantgarde? Anything goes for Ghosh & Co.!
-
Rudresh Mahanthappa (Saxophone) & MSG
.
If you accentuate Mahanthappa on the second syllable, but still don’t expect Indian Fusion-Jazz, you are in perfect hands with this alto-sax-player, who was crowned a “rising star” by Downbeat magazine. Exciting rhythms from the (Irish) bass-player and the (Dutch) drummer build an earthy foundation for the vanguard freedom of their improvisations.
-
NDR Bigband feat. TRILOK GURTU (Tabla/percussion) & Simon Phillips (drums)
.
Every jazz-heart beats faster, once the eighteen members of this “highly distinguished ensemble of Jazz-soloists” start to play with the Percussion-Guru Trilok Gurtu and the drum-master Simon Phillips. “The music will be danceable – for Jazz- and Pop-people – and even classically Indian”, says Gurtu. “That‘s good for the brain.”
