India: Music sales… Cabinet approves changes in Copyright Act 1957

AMENDMENTS IN COPYRIGHT ACT 1957 – Cabinet approves changes

Mumbai: With the decline in the physical sales of music CDs and cassettes the music directors, singers and lyricists don’t get their share of revenue from the digital sales of music.

However, things might change now after the Cabinet approved amendments to the Copyright Act 1957 (see original as PDF) on Thursday.

The primary source of revenue in music market is now digital sales through mobile ringtones and internet downloads but all this goes into the pockets of music company and service providers.

“This did not exist few years ago. Nobody even imagined that there will be anything like mobile or ringtones. But as the money is multiplying people are becoming more and more greedy and don’t want to part away single pie from it,” says music director Anand.

“The physical sale has come down and its more of digital sales,” says Milind.

Many won’t believe but singer and lyricist Swanand Kirkire, who sung the famous song Bawra mann dekhne chala ek sapna from Hazaroon Khawashein Aisi didn’t earn a single paisa from it.

“Because there was no contract as such and we work in a very relationship based industry where you work on your relationship and if you want to keep working for same producer you don’t discuss money,” he says.

The other surprising fact is that this year the company which declared itself the largest music seller in terms of revenue was not HMV, Saregama or Tseries but Airtel.

While efforts are on to set the imbalance right, only a united initiative from the artistes will eventually bring about a change.
