On February 4, 2008 Kiran Khanna tragically died in a violent robbery attack. Amidst that trauma, she died with the name of god on her lips. She lived with this divinity throughout her life.
The Khanna family responds by commissioning one concert per year. Each concert will feature the world’s greatest musicians, selected singularly for their noble ability to replace violence in the world with their tranquility. This is a fitting tribute to the enduring spirit of Kiran Khanna.
Haveli Sangit, also known as Pushtimargiya Sangit, focuses on Krishna-Lila, and is a distinctive form of music-making inspired by passionate devotion to the Lord Krishna. The repertoire includes padas composed by the followers of Vallabhacharya (1479-1531), the founder of the Pushti sect. The compositions are specific to seasonal festivals and also for the eight temple rituals performed at specific time of the day.
An exponent of the Mewati gharana, Pandit Jasraj was groomed by his elder brother, Pandit Maniram. Combining the spiritual guidance of Sanad Bapu with his own individual genius, Pandit Jasraj revived the temple music of Haveli Sangit, in which there is a cultural overlap between bhakti and the classical tradition. His musical style is based on traditional ragas and talas and has a highly melodious appeal.
In this concert of Haveli Sangit, Pandit Jasraj renders some devotional padas in his inimitable style.
