Bollywood and beyond’ erstmals im SI-Centrum!

Vom 14. bis 19. Juli 2009 findet zum sechsten Mal Deutschlands einziges indisches Filmfestival ‚Bollywood and beyond’ in Stuttgart statt. Wie in den vergangenen Jahren wird besonderes Augenmerk auf die Präsentation des indischen Arthouse Kinos gelegt und damit Filmen eine Plattform gegeben, die sonst nur selten ihren Weg in die großen Kinos finden. ‚Bollywood and beyond’ bietet daher dem Publikum wieder die Gelegenheit, Filme aus allen Regionen Indiens zu sehen, die sonst in Deutschland nicht aufgeführt werden. Thematischer Schwerpunkt des Filmprogramms ist die Sicherheitslage Indiens und das Verhältnis Indiens zu seinen Nachbarn. Highlights aus diesem Bereich sind Filme wie ‚Mumbai Meri Jaan’, ‚Tahaan’, ‚A Wednesday’ oder die Dokumentation ‚Black Mountain’. Auch einer der beliebten ‚Tea Talks’ wird sich diesem Thema widmen.

Doch es gibt auch eine große Neuerung bei ‚Bollywood and beyond’: Zum ersten Mal wird das Festival im SI-Centrum Stuttgart stattfinden. Mit seinen ca. 3 Millionen Besuchern jährlich bietet das Erlebniszentrum die optimalen Voraussetzungen, um ‚Bollywood and beyond’ „unter einem Dach“ stattfinden zu lassen. Mit ansässigen Partnern wie dem Cinemaxx Kino, dem Millennium Hotel, den Schwabenquellen, den Musicaltheatern und zahlreichen Restaurants ergeben sich viele neue Möglichkeiten der Kooperationen. „Gerade in unserer wirtschaftlich schwierigen Zeit, in der selbst unser Hauptsponsor sein Engagement drastisch einschränken musste, ermöglicht es uns das SI-Centrum, das Festival erstmals auf einem Areal durchzuführen – gerade Bereiche wie Open Air Kino oder das Indian Village haben dort größere Möglichkeiten und Flächen. Das SI-Centrum steht auch mit seinen Kanälen als Werbepartner zur Verfügung, und ‚Bollywood and beyond’ erreicht so noch mehr Menschen“, freut sich Festival Direktor Oliver Mahn.

Dennoch wird es auf Grund der allgemeinen wirtschaftlichen Lage nicht möglich sein, das Programm in seiner bisherigen Filmdichte aufrecht zu erhalten. Auch im Bereich Rahmenprogramm müssen bedauerlicherweise einige Abstriche gemacht werden. Trotzdem wird es möglich sein, das Filmprogramm um einen weiteren Tag zu verlängern und die Eröffnung bereits am 14. Juli stattfinden zu lassen.

Bevor wir die Innenstadt verlassen, möchten wir nochmals die langjährige und besonders gute Zusammenarbeit mit den Innenstadtkinos der EM-Filmtheaterbetriebe betonen und uns für diese freundschaftliche und professionelle Kooperation ganz herzlich bedanken. Dieser teilweise Abzug ist aber nicht das Ende der Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Filmtheaterbetrieben und dem Filmbüro Baden-Württemberg: Ab Herbst planen wir gemeinsam mit Rapide Eye Movies einmal im Monat einen indischen Film zu präsentieren, ferner wird auch die jährliche Filmschau Baden-Württemberg weiterhin in den Räumen der Innenstadtkinos stattfinden.

‘Bollywood and beyond’ for the first time at SI-Centrum Stuttgart

The 6th edition of German’s only Indian Film Festival ‚Bollywood and beyond’ will take place from the 14th to 19th of July 2009 in Stuttgart. As in previos years the emphasis will be on Indian arthouse cinema to give a platform for films, which don’t always find their way to the big cinemas. ‘Bollywood and beyond’ therefore offers the German audience the opportunity to see films from throughout India that aren’t screened in Germany otherwise. The thematic focus is on the security situation of India and the relationship of India to its neighbours. Highlights from this section are films like ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’, ‘Tahaan’, ‘A Wednesday’ or the documentary ‘Black Mountain’. Further one of the popular ‘Tea Talk’ discussions is dedicated to this subject.

Yet ‘Bollywood and beyond’ can announce a major innovation: For the first time the festival will be held at the SI-Centrum (Stuttgart International Centre) in Stuttgart. With it’s annually 3 million visitors the multiplex area offers ideal conditions to host ‘Bollywood and beyond’ in a consolidated venue. With the resident partners such as the CinemaxX movie theatre, the Millennium Hotel & Resort, the Spa ‘SchwabenQuellen’, the musical theatres, and many restaurants various new options for co-operations occur. “Especially in our economically difficult time, in which even our main sponsor was forced to limit his financial support, the SI-Centrum makes it possible to organise ‘Bollywood and beyond’ at one venue – particularly sections like the open air cinema or the Indian Village have more space and chances. The SI-Centrum will also support us with distribution and advertising options and ‘Bollywood and beyond’ will reach even more people”, says Festival Director Oliver Mahn.

Nevertheless it won’t be possible to keep up the high number of screened films due to the general economic situation. Unfortunately also the supporting programme will have to be cut back a little. Regardless it will be possible, to extend the film programme by one day and open the festival already on July 14 (more please see English website).

25th May 2009: EUROPEAN CHARTER on FREEDOM of the PRESS

On May 25th, 2009 48 editors-in-chief and leading journalists from 19 countries adopted and signed the “European Charter on Freedom of the Press” in Hamburg.

In ten articles, the charter formulates principles for the freedom of the press from government interference – in particular for their right to safety from surveillance, electronic eavesdropping and searches of editorial departments and computers, and to unimpeded access for journalists and citizens to all domestic and foreign sources of information

The goal is to assert the charter’s validity across Europe and to make its adoption a condition in EU accession negotiations.

Ideally, journalists all over Europe will be able to cite the charter in cases of conflict with the state or with state-controlled institutions, and to call on their international colleagues for help and support.

Am 25. Mai 2009 haben 48 Chefredakteure und leitende Journalisten aus 19 Staaten in Hamburg die “Europäische Charta für Pressefreiheit” beschlossen und unterzeichnet.

Sie formuliert in zehn Artikeln Grundsätze für die Freiheit der Medien gegenüber staatlichen Eingriffen, insbesondere für den Schutz vor Überwachungen, Lauschaktionen und Durchsuchungen von Redaktionen und Computern sowie für den freien Zugang von Journalisten und Bürgern zu allen in- und ausländischen Informationsquellen.

Das Ziel soll sein, der Charta in ganz Europa Geltung zu verschaffen und ihre Anerkennung zur Bedingung bei EU-Erweiterungsverhandlungen zu machen.

Journalisten in allen Teilen Europas sollen sich bei Konflikten mit dem Staat und staatlich beeinflussten Institutionen darauf berufen und Unterstützung ihrer ausländischen Kollegen einfordern können.

Europäische Charta für Pressefreiheit | European Charter on Freedom of the Press

Art. 1
Die Freiheit der Presse ist lebenswichtig für eine demokratische Gesellschaft. Journalistische Medien aller Art zu achten und zu schützen, ihre Vielfalt sowie ihre politischen, sozialen und kulturellen Aufgaben zu respektieren, ist Auftrag aller staatlichen Macht.

Freedom of the press is essential to a democratic society. All governments should uphold, protect and respect the diversity of journalistic media in all its forms and its political, social and cultural missions.

Art. 2
Zensur ist untersagt. Unabhängiger Journalismus in allen Medien ist frei von Verfolgung und Repressalien, ohne politische oder regulierende Eingriffe des Staates zu garantieren. Presse und Online-Medien dürfen nicht staatlicher Lizenzierung unterworfen werden.

Censorship must be absolutely prohibited. There must be a guarantee that independent journalism in all media is free of persecution, repression and of political or regulatory interference by government. Press and online media should not be subject to state licensing.

Art. 3
Das Recht von Journalisten und Medien zum Sammeln und Verbreiten von Informationen und Meinungen darf nicht bedroht, eingeschränkt oder unter Strafe gestellt werden.

The right of journalists and media to gather and disseminate information and opinions must not be threatened, restricted or be made subject to punishment.

Art. 4
Der Schutz journalistischer Quellen ist strikt zu wahren. Durchsuchungen von Redaktionen und anderen Räumlichkeiten von Journalisten sowie Überwachungen und Lauschaktionen mit dem Zweck, Informationsquellen ausfindig zu machen oder das Redaktionsgeheimnis zu brechen, sind unzulässig.

The protection of journalistic sources shall be strictly upheld. Searches of newsrooms and other premises of journalists and the surveillance or interception of journalists’ communications with the aim of identifying sources of information or infringing on editorial confidentiality are unacceptable.

Art. 5
Alle Staaten haben sicherzustellen, dass Medien bei der Erfüllung ihrer Aufgaben den vollen Schutz eines unabhängigen Gerichtssystems, der Gesetze und der Behörden genießen. Das gilt insbesondere für die Abwehr von Belästigungen und Angriffen auf Leib und Leben von Journalisten und deren Mitarbeitern. Bedrohungen oder Verletzungen dieser Rechte sind sorgfältig zu untersuchen und durch die Justiz zu ahnden.

All states must ensure that the media enjoys the full protection of an independent judiciary system and the authorities while carrying out their role. This applies in particular to defending journalists and their staff from physical attack and harassment. Violations of these rights and any threats to violate these rights must be carefully investigated and punished by the judiciary.

Art. 6
Die wirtschaftliche Existenz von Medien darf durch staatliche oder staatlich beeinflusste Institutionen oder andere Organisationen nicht gefährdet werden. Auch die Androhung von wirtschaftlichem Schaden ist unzulässig. Private Unternehmen müssen die journalistische Freiheit der Medien achten. Sie dürfen weder Druck auf journalistische Inhalte ausüben, noch versuchen, werbliche Inhalte mit journalistischen Inhalten zu vermischen.

The economic livelihood and independence of the media must not be endangered by the state, by state-controlled institutions or other organisations. The threat of economic sanctions is unacceptable. Private enterprise has to respect the independence of the media and refrain from exercising pressure and from trying to blur the lines between advertising and editorial content.

Art. 7
Staatliche und staatlich beeinflusste Institutionen dürfen den freien Zugang von Medien und Journalisten zu Informationen nicht behindern. Sie sind verpflichtet, deren Informationsauftrag zu unterstützen.

The state and state-controlled institutions shall not hinder the freedom of access of journalists and the media to information. They are obliged to support them in their mandate to provide information.

Art. 8
Medien und Journalisten haben Anspruch auf ungehinderten Zugang zu allen Nachrichten und Informationsquellen, auch aus dem Ausland. Ausländischen Journalisten sind zur Berichterstattung Visa, Akkreditierungen und andere erforderliche Dokumente ohne Verzögerung auszustellen.

Media and journalists have a right to unimpeded access to all news and information sources, including those from abroad. For their reporting, foreign journalists must be provided with visas, accreditation and other required documents without delay.

Art. 9
Der Öffentlichkeit jedes Staates ist freier Zugang zu allen nationalen wie ausländischen Medien und Informationsquellen zu gewähren.

The public of any state shall be granted free access to all national and foreign media and sources of information.

Art. 10
Der Staat darf den Zugang zum Beruf des Journalisten nicht beschränken.

The state shall not restrict entry into the profession of journalism.
