TUTZINGER ETHIK APPELL (Fair-Radio.net)

Posted by ElJay Arem (IMC OnAir) on June 30, 2008

fair-radio.net:

Raga CDs of the months (07/08): RAGAMALIKAS… Compositions in South Indian Classics

Posted by ElJay Arem (IMC OnAir) on June 30, 2008

Ragamalika means “Garland of Ragas” in it’s literary sense. It is a very popular composition form of South Indian Classics, the Carnatic music. The music system of Indian Classics exhibits thousands of raga scales and hundreds of rhythm circles, the tala-s. Many composers of the Indian classical period were concerned with this broad field and a created a multiplicity of so called ragamalika compositions.

The ragamalika-s are delightful compositions. A ragamalika consists of different raga-s; gentle and melodious flow of the music, from one raga to the next. The selection of the raga-s and their arrangement in a ragamalika composition are based simply on aesthetic considerations.

date of broadcasting: 1st July 2008 – 09:00 p.m. (MESTZ)
(2nd date of broadcasting: 3rd July 2008 – 03:00 a.m. (MESTZ))
broadcasting plan | streaming (Internet Radio & Mobile Radio) | podCast

In the Middle Ages of India the musical form of the ragamalika-s was well-known as Raga Kadambakam. Kadamba is a garland, twisted from different flowers.

Ragamalika Chakravarti ! – The King of the Ragamalika. – So Ramaswami Dikshitar could be called. This Indian composer lived from 1735 till 1817. R. Dikshitar made history as a proven expert in the composition of the longest Ragamalika-s. His texts (lyrics) of all his Ragamalika-s are in Telegu, the third biggest dravidic language of India, beside Hindi and Bengali.

Muthuswami Dikshitar (1776 - 1834)
Muthuswami Dikshitar (1776 – 1834)

The number of Ragas, which are used in an individual composition, can vary from two to 72. The longest composition consists of 108 Ragas, it’s the “Ashtottara Shata Raga Tala malika” of Muthuswami Dikshitar (1776-1834), son of Ramswami Dikshitar and member of the musical trinity of the South Indian Classsics (beside Tyagaraja and Syama Sastra).

Ramaswami Dikshitar’s ragamalika-s (selection)

  • The ragamalika `Samajagamana ninnu korinadira‘ consists of 20 ragas, in the rhythm structure “Ad(h)i Tala” (8 beats). It is dedicated to King Amarasimhan, who was a Marahtta regent of Tanjavur.
  • The ragamalika ‘Manasa Verutarula‘ consists of a set of 48 ragas, 8 beats (Ad(h)i Tala). It is dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, a shape form of the Hindu Goddess Vishnu. Venkateswara is the destroyer of the human sins.

Raga CDs des Monats (07/08): RAGAMALIKA… Kompositionen in der südindischen Klassik

Posted by ElJay Arem (IMC OnAir) on June 30, 2008

date of broadcasting: 1st July 2008 – 09:00 p.m. (MESTZ)
(2nd date of broadcasting: 3rd July 2008 – 03:00 a.m. (MESTZ))
broadcasting plan | streaming (Internet Radio & Mobile Radio) | podCast

in der Rhythmus-Struktur “Ad(h)i Tala” (8 Schläge).
8er-Beat (Ad(h)i Tala).
Hindugottes Vishnu. Venkateswara ist der Zerstörer der menschlichen Sünden.

Largest number of Kuchipudi Dancers-world record set…

Posted by ElJay Arem (IMC OnAir) on June 25, 2008

CUPERTINO, Calif., USA–380 kuchipudi dancers set a world record for being the largest group of kuchipudi dancers performing continually for 8 1/2 minutes on a flat stage.

All the Kuchipudi Dancers flocked to Cupertino, not only to set a world record but for the world’s first international three-day kuchipudi convention, organized by Kuchibhotla’s group, Silicon Andhra.

Kuchipudi Dancers from Russia, India, Singapore, Germany, England, Canada and all over the United States.

Photo: Dancers flew in from Russia, India, Singapore, Germany,
England, Canada and all over the United States.

The dancers assembled Saturday at the behest of Anand Kuchibhotla, 46, a Silicon Valley Internet start-up company vice president, who says he grew up with kuchipudi dancing in his home state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

Kuchipudi dancing is a 1,000-year-old dance ritual born in Andhra Pradesh, deriving it’s name from a village there. Dancers often play Hindu gods and act out stories for their audiences, the newspaper said.

World Records Academy (Logo)Kuchibhotla said anyone is invited to try to beat the Cupertino dancing numbers, but he warned that world record books will have a new entry at the next kuchipudi convention, planned for December 2010 in India. “That’s when we’re going to break the new record we just set,” he said.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: An open letter (from Germany) to the Prime Minister of India

Posted by ElJay Arem (IMC OnAir) on June 20, 2008

Subhas Chandra Bose as the leader of INA. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

Subhas Chandra Bose as the leader of INA. (Source: Wikipedia.org)

June 20, 2008 by vinayras

Dr. Manmohan Singh
Prime Minister of India
Room No 152
South Block
New Delhi 110001

Dear Prime Minister,

After years of waiting, we the people of India, the diaspora and friends of India have finally come to know the results of the extensive investigations undertaken by the Justice Mukherjee Commission of Inquiry (JMCI) set up by the Government of India in 1999 to probe the disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Justice Mukherjee had assumed this onerous task following the direction of the Calcutta High Court to “launch a vigorous inquiry as a special case for the purpose of giving an end to the controversy.”

The most significant finding of Justice Mukherjee\\’s Report is the fact that Netaji Subhas did not die in any air crash in Taiwan on 18 August 1945. The Report clearly states “He did not die in the plane crash as alleged,” and that “The ashes in the Japanese temple are not of Netaji.”

Thus, it is now even more urgent to pursue sources and leads other than those around the so-called, and now the exploded myth of the air crash story. In today\\’s world of global support for democracy and human rights, in which the right to freedom of information is paramount, there can be no arguments against the search for what happened to a great son of India and a leader of Asia far ahead of his time.

Mr Prime Minister Sir, we are dismayed at the rejection of the JMCI Report by your Government without giving any reasons for doing so. We would like to bring to your attention that we, representing a large section of Indians in India and across the world, do not agree with your Government\\’s stand. We believe that the findings of the Commission have presented us with a golden opportunity to investigate Netaji\\’s fate with more vigour. We must have a full and open debate on the findings and conclusions of the JMCI Report both within and outside of the Indian Parliament. The people of India cannot be denied access to government held information which fundamentally concern them and affect their destiny.

At the same time, we urge you to take appropriate steps as Prime Minister of India to access relevant information which may be available with the Governments of Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. We shall not cease to follow all channels available to us to uncover what really happened to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. We owe it to him and to posterity.

We sincerely hope that you will give us the lead and your support in our endeavour.

Yours sincerely,

The role of Community Media in Europe (Report – 06 Jun 2008)

Posted by ElJay Arem (IMC OnAir) on June 6, 2008

Community Media Forum Europe (CMFE) welcomes the report of the European Parliament Committee on Culture on Community Media’s role in Europe.

The Community Media Forum Europe (CMFE) welcomes the vote on the report promoted by Karin Resetarits (Member of the European Parliament, Austria, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe – ALDE), which calls on the European Union to encourage alternative media in Europe in order to promote pluralism and cultural diversity, adopted by the European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education on 2 June 2008.

Alternative media does not result in isolating people, on the contrary they allow a community to integrate, informing them of their rights, especially in the area of education and access to public services but also promotes citizens to take part in active life and listens to their problems and concerns. This type of media is a community tool and serves as a cultural and social integration project“, Karin Resetarits said.

The support measures recommended by Mrs Resetarits are mostly of a technical nature, legal (attribution of frequencies) and financial (possible financing by the EU and member states). “I hope that when the European Commission publishes in 2009 their Communication on the indicators of pluralism in the media, it will take into account our proposals on alternative and community media which obviously contributes and promotes pluralism”, concluded Mrs Resetarits.

This initiative is of great importance to our sector and helps gaining more acknowledgement for the thousands of CM around Europe and hundreds of thousands active citizens participating in these media projects.” said Pieter de Wit, president of CMFE, in a first comment. Voting in the European Parliament plenary session is expected to take place in September 2008.

Keynote Speakers

Call for Papers ( deadline Wed 11th June 2008 )

  • Within current understandings of globalization, it is difficult to think of any topic in the field of media and communications studies which does not consider the international and the intercultural as they function within digital media environments. Nevertheless, this diversity also raises interesting questions about what is central in the field.
  • What are the most pressing questions facing media and communications scholars today, and how are they shaped by the discipline’s international, institutional contours?
  • What does the desire to ‘de-westernize’ media & communications studies say about relations between the empirical and the theoretical; where we find examples of media cultures in action, and what ideas we use to make sense of them?
  • Is disciplinarity still a workable idea?
  • How do all of these questions work their way into studies that are not directly about any of them?
  • Or are these even the right questions to ask?

We invite you to consider these questions.

250 word abstracts for individual papers or 300 word panel proposals should be sent to andy.ruddock@arts.monash.edu.au by 11th June 2008. Please include a brief bibliographical note. Presenters will be given 20 minutes to speak to their presentations. We particularly encourage submissions from postgraduates and for postgraduate panels. The final day of the conference will be dedicated to postgraduate papers and held at the Monash University Berwick Campus. There will also be a special issue of the postgraduate journal Colloquy devoted to the conference.
