<p style="text-align:justify;">The Indian classical music is performed for many centuries as the in Western style well known chamber ensemble. The term „Jugalbandi “(or jugalbhandi) literary means „twins tied together“. The introduction of the Jugalbandi cannot be dated exactly.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A Jugalbandi is at least of two soloists (vocalist or instrumentalist), who play hand-in-hand. One cannot differentiate between an accompanying instrument and a single solo player. It is like the meeting of two strangers, who step synergeticly together into a dialogue. They can be accompanied by two percussionists, e.g. on the Tabla and Pakhawaj. This constellation is named as „double Jugalbandi“.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">While the Khayal, a modern and elegant vocal style of North Indian Classics (Hindustani) mainly exist as solo form (Ekala) usually reserved for solo singers, the vocal duet was already known in the in oldest style of Hindustani, the Dhrupad (Rec.: The birth of the Dhrupad can approximately be dated back to 100 AC .) In the Dhrupad (vocal style) same as in other categories of music work the term appears as “yugul “. It means „pair “.</p>

<h5 style="text-align:justify;"><em>Note: </em>IMC OnAir&#8217;s radio show „Jugalbandi&#8221; defines the duet in Indian Classics contentwise to the identically compositorial term. The Indian musicologist Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande created Jugalbandi compositions. Bhatkhande lived till 1936 (10 Aug 1860 &#8211; 19 Sept 1936); he is the inventor of the classification scheme of North Indian ragas, the so called Thaat system. For his Jugalbandi compositions Bhatkhande picked up a traditional raga form and confronted to it with a modern modification. By this contrast the traditional Raga melodic was clearly audible for the public (editorial note: melodic is a „content describing“ contrary to the melody as „form describing “).</h5>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Die Einführung des Jugalbandi kann nicht genau datiert werden. Während der Khayal, ein moderner und eleganter Gesangsstil der nordindischen  Klassik als Soloform – Ekala – meist einem einzelnen Sänger vorbehalten bleibt, kennt man das Gesangsduett (s.g. Jugal-Gaan) bereits im ältesten Stile der nordindischen Klassik, dem Dhrupad (Anm.: Die Entstehung des Dhrupad kann auf etwa 100 n. Chr. datiert werden.)</p>
<p>Im Dhrupad wie auch in anderen Genres des Musikschaffens, findet sich das Wort ‚yugul“ wieder. Es bedeutet „Paar“.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>Hinweis:</em> IMC OnAir&#8217;s Sendung „Jugalbandi – das Duett in der indischen Klassik“ grenzt sich inhaltlich zu dem gleichlautend kompositorischen Begriff ab. Der indische Musikwisschenschaftler Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande verfasste Jugalbandi-Kompositionen. Bhatkhande lebte bis 1936 (10. Aug. 1860 &#8211; 19. Sept. 1936); auf ihn geht das Klassifizierungschema der nordindischen Ragas zurück, das s.g. Thaat-System. In seinen Jugalbandi-Kompositionen griff Bhatkhande eine traditionelle Ragaform auf und stellte ihr eine moderne Abwandlung gegenüber. Durch diesen Kontrast kristallisiert sich für das Publikum die traditionelle Ragamelodik (redaktionelle Anmerkung: „inhaltsbeschreibend“ im Gegensatz zur Melodie als „formbeschreibend“) deutlich hörbar heraus.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Spätestens seit den musikalische Entdeckungsreisen von <strong>Menuhin</strong> und <strong>Coltrane </strong>wuchs im Westen das breitere Interesse für ein Studium der indisch-klassischen Musik. Es ist bis heute ungebrochen.</p>

Später nahm Yehudi Menuhin Unterricht bei dem legendären Sitarspieler <strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Ravi Shankar" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravi_Shankar" rel="wikipedia">Ravi Shankar</a></strong>. Das modale Konzept der indischen Ragas spiegelt sich auch in der Musik des Jazz-Saxophonisten John Coltrane wieder. Coltrane&#8217;s Komposition &#8220;<em>India</em>&#8221; (aus dem Jazzalbum &#8220;Live at the Village Vanguard&#8221;) stammt aus dem Jahre 1961, in dem er Ravi Shankar traf. Coltrane studierte neben der indischen Klassik auch die indische Religion und Philosophie.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Orientieren wir uns mit zwei westlichen Begriffen für die Annäherung an die musikalische Ausbildung. Als da wären: <strong>Musikschulen </strong>und die <strong>Musikwissenschaft</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Dazu begegnet uns in dem mehr als 2000 Jahre alten System der indisch-klassischen Musik Nord- und Südindiens analog der Begriff <strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Gharana" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gharana" rel="wikipedia">Gharana</a></strong>. Die Gharana-s sind eine Art Musikschulen, weniger im westlichen Sinne. Gharana ist eine Bezeichnung für eine über viele Generationen weitervererbte, musikalische Tradition. Gharana leitet sich aus dem Hinduwort &#8220;<em>Ghar</em>&#8221; ab, das heisst Familie oder Haus. Es gibt Gharana-s für den Gesang, das Instrumentalspiel, für das indische Perkussionsinstrument Tabla, für den indischen Tanz und einige Blas- u. Saiteninstrumente. Angesichts der mehr als 30 existierenden Gharanas beschränken wir uns in Teil 1 unseres Themas &#8220;Das Studium der indisch-klassischen Musik&#8221; auf die älteste Gesangsform der nordindischen Klassik, den <strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Dhrupad" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhrupad" rel="wikipedia">Dhrupad</a></strong>.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Die älteste Musikschule des Dhrupad ist die <strong>Dagar-Gharana</strong>. Ihr Namensgeber, die <strong>Dagar-Familie </strong>(s.u.) bestimmt bis heute, ungebrochen seit mehr als 20 Generationen die Entwicklung des Dhrupads.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Der Begriff Gharana ist selbst gar nicht so alt wie die Familientraditionen. Ihre gesellschaftliche Bedeutung wurde für die stilistische Zuordnung eines Künstlers im Instrumentalspiel oder Gesang erst Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts ausgeprägt. Die Gharanas des Dhrupadgesangs haben eine Vorgeschichte. Alle Gharanas gehen auf nur vier (4) Abstimmungslinien zurück, die sogenannen<strong> Bani-s</strong> (oder Vani-s).  Bani bedeutet &#8220;Wort&#8221;, es leitet sich aus dem Sanskritstamm &#8220;Vani&#8221; ab, d.h. &#8220;Stimme&#8221;. Die Banis sind Stilkonzepte. Die vier Banis werden auf vier herausragende Musiker am Hofe des Moghulherrschers Akbars (1542-1605) zurückgeführt. Es sind: <strong>Gaudhari Vani</strong>, auch<strong> Gohar </strong>oder <strong>Gauri Vani </strong>genannt, sie steht in der Tradition des berühmten Hofmusikers <em>Tansen</em>, dann <strong>Khandari Vani</strong> von <em>Samokhana Simbha</em> (Naubad Khan), <strong>Nauhari Vani</strong> in der Tradition von <em>Shrichanda</em> und <strong>Dangari</strong> oder <strong>Dagar Vani</strong> von <em>Vrija Chanda</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Blickt man in der Musikgeschichte Indiens weiter zurück, entdeckt man zu den Banis eine Verbindung aus dem 7. Jahrhundert. Die vier Banis des <strong>Dhrupads</strong> haben sich aus sieben bzw. im Kern fünf (5) Gesangsstilen entwickelt, den <strong>Geetis</strong>. Die Geetis sind: <strong>Suddha, Bhinna, Gauri, Vegswara </strong>und <strong>Sadharani</strong>. Gaudi Geeti ist nicht weiter mehr im Gebrauch.</p>

<h5 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>The Dagar Gharana</strong>&#8230;</h5>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The Dagar family&#8217;s contribution to the perpetuation and enrichment of this art, while pre­serving its original purity, has been so precious, and the fact that the history of this family can be traced back for 20 generations without a break is so unique, that the family can be said to represent a microcosm of the history of <a class="zem_slink" title="Indian classical music" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_classical_music" rel="wikipedia">Indian classical music</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Dhrupad reached its apogee in the 16th century, during the reign of the Moghul <a class="zem_slink" title="Akbar" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akbar" rel="wikipedia">emperor Akbar</a>. At that time there were four Schools of Dhrupad, representing this art in all its diversity. Brij Chand Rajput was of Dagar lineage, so the school of Dhrupad that he headed was called Dagar Vani. The other three Vanis, Khandar, Nauvahar and Gobarhar. respectively, almost disappeared in the course of time, and only in the Dagar Vani has the pure tradition of Dhrupad been maintained and brought down to our day. Until the 16th century the Dagars were Brahmins, but circumstances constrained their ancestor, Baba Gopal Das Pandey, to embrace Islam, and he came to be known as Baba Imam Khan Dagar . One of his two sons, Ustad Behram Khan Dagar, was the most famous and learned musician of his time, in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the 125 years of life that God granted him, he applied himself to the acquisition of a thorough knowledge of the Sanskrit sacred texts. He devoted the greater part of his life to the rigorous analysis of these texts in order to translate the formal musical rules into a pragmatic teaching method. He distilled the style of singing, the gayaki, to a degree of purity and clarity never known before, elaborating the alap and rendering singable the technical forms.</p>

The modal concept of Indian Ragas is reflected also in the music of the jazz saxophonists <strong>John Coltrane</strong>. Coltrane&#8217;s composition &#8220;<em>India</em>&#8221; (from the jazz album &#8220;Live at the Village Vanguard&#8221;) originates from the year 1961, in which he met Ravi Shankar. Coltrane studied Indian religion and philosophy apart from Indian classics.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">For the approach to the musical training the new radio show orientates with two western terms. As there would be: <strong>music schools</strong> and <strong>music sciences</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">In that more than 2000 years old system of Indian classical music of <strong>North</strong> and<strong> South India</strong> we find the similar term<strong> </strong><strong></strong><strong><a title="Gharana" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gharana" rel="wikipedia">Gharana</a></strong>. The<em> Gharana-s</em> are less a kind of music schools in the Western sense. Gharana is a name for the heritage of a musical tradition which is overhanded mostly in oral form over many generations from teacher (guru) to pupil (shishya).<br />
Gharana is derived from the Hindu word &#8220;<em>Ghar</em>&#8220;, i.e. family or house. There exist Gharana-s for singing, instrumental play, the Indian percussion instrument Tabla, for Indian dance and some wind and string instruments. In view of more than 30 existing Gharana-s we are limiting <em>part 1</em> of our topic &#8220;<strong>Studies of Indian classical music</strong>&#8221; to the oldest singing form of the North Indian classical music: the <strong></strong><strong><a title="Dhrupad" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhrupad" rel="wikipedia">Dhrupad</a></strong>.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em></em>The oldest music school for Dhrupad is the Dagar Gharana. It&#8217;s name refers directly to the Dagar Family (see below) which determines the development of the Dhrupad style until today, unbroken since more than 20 generations.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The term Gharana is not even as old as the family traditions. The social meaning of the Gharana-s became of relevance for the stylistic idendity of an artist in instrumental play or vocal lately in the midth of 19th  century. The Gharana-s of the Dhrupad style have a pre-history. All Gharana-s are attributed only to four lineages, the so called <strong>Bani-s</strong> (or Vani-s).  Bani means &#8220;<em>word</em>&#8220;, it is derived from the Sanskrit &#8220;<em>Vani</em>&#8220;, i.e. &#8220;<em>voice</em>&#8220;. The Banis are style concepts. The four Dhrupad Bani-s had been constituted by four outstanding musicians at the court of the mughal emperor<strong> Akbar</strong> (1542-1605). There are: <strong>Gaudhari Vani</strong> or named as <strong>Gohar </strong>or <strong>Gauri Vani</strong> in the tradition of the famous court musician <em>Tansen</em>, <strong>Khandari Vani </strong>of <em>Samokhana Simbha</em> (<em>Naubad Khan</em>),<strong> Nauhari Vani</strong> in the tradition of <em>Shrichanda </em>and <strong>Dangari</strong> or <strong>Dagar Vani </strong>of <em>Vrija Chanda</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">If one looks further back in the music history of India one discovers in the 7th century a link to the Bani-s. The four Bani-s of the Dhrupad had developed from seven in the core five (5) singing styles, the <strong>Geeti</strong>-s. These Geeti-s are: <strong>Suddha, Bhinna, Gauri, Vegswara</strong> and<strong> Sadharani</strong>. <em>Gaudi Geet</em>i is not far more in use.</p>

<h5 style="text-align:justify;"><strong>The Dagar Gharana</strong>&#8230;</h5>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The Dagar family&#8217;s contribution to the perpetuation and enrichment of this art, while pre­serving its original purity, has been so precious, and the fact that the history of this family can be traced back for 20 generations without a break is so unique, that the family can be said to represent a microcosm of the history of Indian classical music.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Dhrupad reached its apogee in the 16th century, during the reign of the Moghul emperor Akbar. At that time there were four Schools of Dhrupad, representing this art in all its diversity. Brij Chand Rajput was of Dagar lineage, so the school of Dhrupad that he headed was called Dagar Vani. The other three Vanis, Khandar, Nauvahar and Gobarhar. respectively, almost disappeared in the course of time, and only in the Dagar Vani has the pure tradition of Dhrupad been maintained and brought down to our day. Until the 16th century the Dagars were Brahmins, but circumstances constrained their ancestor, Baba Gopal Das Pandey, to embrace Islam, and he came to be known as Baba Imam Khan Dagar . One of his two sons, Ustad Behram Khan Dagar, was the most famous and learned musician of his time, in the 18th and 19th centuries. During the 125 years of life that God granted him, he applied himself to the acquisition of a thorough knowledge of the Sanskrit sacred texts. He devoted the greater part of his life to the rigorous analysis of these texts in order to translate the formal musical rules into a pragmatic teaching method. He distilled the style of singing, the gayaki, to a degree of purity and clarity never known before, elaborating the alap and rendering singable the technical forms.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Raga Durga  is a 5 note raga (audav) &#8211; a pentatonic late evening raga. In the ascending and descending scale only five of the seven (7) main notes can be used: Sa Re Ma Pa Dha. The 3rd pitch Ga and 7th pitch Ni are not played which corresponds to the E and B in Western notation. All notes of Raga Durga are natural (suddha), thus neither diminished nor augmented. The modal form of Raga Durga is existing singular in North Indian Classics (<a class="zem_slink" title="Hindustani classical music" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindustani_classical_music" rel="wikipedia">Hindustani music</a>).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Raga Durga belongs in the classification system of Hindustani to <a class="zem_slink" title="Bilaval" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilaval" rel="wikipedia">Bilawal</a> Thaat. Raga Bilawal, one of the 10 main ragas is in its nature seen as &#8220;male&#8221;. All derived ragas same Durga belongs to are considered as female, as Ragini-s.</p>
<p>The origin of Raga Durga is not clear. Probably it was created in the late 18th /early 19th century. There exist the opinion that Raga Durga is derived from the South Indian Ragam „Suddha Saveri“ (<a class="zem_slink" title="Carnatic music" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnatic_music" rel="wikipedia">Carnatic music</a>). We find the same material of notes however with other 1st pitch also in Raga Malkauns or Bhupali. The 5 tone scales exist worldwide in many music systems, e.g. Greek pentatonic. As origin for Raga Durga only the region of <a class="zem_slink" title="South Asia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Asia" rel="wikipedia">South Asia</a> can be assumed securely.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Raga" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raga" rel="wikipedia">Raga</a> Durga</strong> ist ein 5-Ton-Raga, audav &#8211; ein pentatonischer Raga, der zur späten Abenstunde gespielt wird. <p style="text-align:justify;">Raga Durga wird im Klassifikationsschema der nordindischen Klassik  dem <strong><a class="zem_slink" title="Bilaval" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilaval" rel="wikipedia">Bilawal</a> Thaat </strong>zugeordnet. Raga Bilawal, einer der 10 Hauptragas, gilt in seiner Natur als männlich. Alle abgeleiteten Ragas, dazu auch Durga gehört, gilt als als weiblich, als Ragini.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Die Herkunft von Raga Durga ist nicht eindeutig. Wahrscheinlich ist Ende des späten 18. / frühen 19. Jahrhunderts entstanden. Es wird bisweilen die Meinung vertreten, dass sich Raga Durga aus dem südindischen Ragam „Suddha Saveri“ ableitet. Das gleiche Notenmaterial, allerdings mit anderen Ausgangsstufen, finden wir auch im Raga Malkauns oder Bhupali. Die 5-Tonskalen sind aber weltweit in vielen Musiksystemen, wie auch in der griechischen Pentatonik, vertreten. So dass wir als Herkunft für Raga Durga nur den Großraum Südasiens gesichert eingrenzen können.</p>

<p><em>Nava</em> &#8211; that also means &#8216;new&#8217; &#8211; denotes &#8216;nine&#8217; the number to which sages attach special significance. Hence, we have Nava-ratri (9 nights), Nava-patrika (9 leaves / herbs / plants), Nava-graha (9 planets), and Nava-Durga (9 appelletions).</p>
<p>Here&#8217;re the 9 manifestations of Goddess Durga. Each goddess has a different form and a special significance. Nava Durga, if worshipped with religious fervor, it is believed, lift the divine spirit in us and fill us with renewed happiness.</p>

The <a title="Sanskrit Dictionary fro Spoken Sanskrit" href="http://spokensanskrit.de/index.php?script=HK&amp;tinput=Alankar&amp;country_ID=&amp;trans=Translate&amp;direction=AU" target="_blank">meaning</a> is various: <em>decoration</em> (jewelry), <em>literary embellishment</em> or <em>decoration</em>. As <strong>Sabda Alankara</strong> it designates  as<em> ornaments by</em><em> sound</em>, <em>decorative use of sound</em> or <em>use of decorating words</em>. The last classification in Indian Classics before approx. 100-150 years was known also as <strong>Shabdalankar</strong>.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">In the baroque area of Western classics the <strong><a title="Ornaments in Music @ Wikipedia (ENG)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ornament_%28music%29" target="_blank"><strong>ornaments</strong></a></strong> served mainly for the decoration of melody lines. Vocalists improvised with the ornaments like we  know it till this day from the Irish music tradition. Indian notes are “not static”, here briefly played <a title="Staccato @ Wikipedia (ENG)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staccato" target="_blank">Staccato notes</a> (in Italian staccare means “tears off”) or single notes played &#8220;stand alone&#8221; are not audible.</p>

Such ”<a title="Grace Notes @ Wikipedia (ENG)" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_note" target="_blank"><em>grace notes</em></a>“ -  <a title="The Notation System - Satrangi Art Point" href="http://satrangimusic.netfirms.com/The%20Notation%20System.htm" target="_blank"><strong>Kan-Swara-s</strong></a> &#8211; are the basis for each form of ornaments, the Alankara-s. They are the core for the development and beauty of Ragas.</p>

Der Gesangsinterpret improvisierte mit der Ornamentierung, wie wir es noch heute in der irischen Musiktradition wiederfinden. <p style="text-align:justify;">The 100th birthday (5th March) of Gangubai Hangal gives us some seriously reasons we like to dedicate the radio show in April @ Radio FRO to this outstanding artist who was called &#8220;<em>Father of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Khyal" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khyal" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Khayal</a></em>&#8221; (mainly because of Gangubai&#8217;s androgynous voice).</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">In the historical meaning we can see Gangubai as the most influential artist who helped women to the emancipation in Indian vocals. Beside four honorary doctorate Gangubai received in 1971 &#8211; at the age of 58 years &#8211; the Padma Bhushan, and lately in 2002 the Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian order of India. 2002 was also the year in which Gangubai was diagnosed of bone cancer she successfully overcame after three years treatment.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Gangubai was born 1913 in Karnataka, a South Indian Federal State. Gangubai originates from a simple family, whose earlier generations belonged to the Gangamats, the caste of agricultural boat people. In her early career Gangubai&#8217;s origin from this social milleu she was refused by the orthodox Brahmans. It wasn&#8217;t modern that a woman earns her living costs with arts. Although Gangubai&#8217;s father, Shri Nadgir and her husband, Shri Gururao Kaulgi likewise belonged to the caste of Brahmans in her family prevailed a consciousness that a woman is &#8216;Angavashtra&#8217; (literally meaning: an additional article of clothing, which decorates subtle men as status symbol).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">In 1928 the family of Gangubai moved 20 kilometres southeast, from Dharwad as the place of her birth to Hubli that time like today a commercial centre with approx. 1,5 million inhabitants. Hubli remained for Gangubai as the adopted home till her dying on 21st July 2009.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Gangubai had at the age of 20 years in 1933 with a concert in Bombay (Mumbai) her artistic break-through. Relevant influence on the vocal qualities beside her musical talent had the strict training, which Gangubai received for 15 years from Pandit Rambhau Kundgolkar, in India known as Sawai Gandharv.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Sawai Gandharv, so reported Gangubai herself, taught her no more than four Ragas. But the training was very strict often practicing for hours monotonously single phrases. Her teacher followed the principle same how one should deal with money. Each note should be used as economically as possible. Gangubai remained always faithful to this rule during her 80 years long musician career. At the beginning she presented songs of light Indian classicals, Bhajans and Thumris. Later she focused completely to the Khayal, the modern singing style of North Indian classics. Khyal means &#8220;imagination&#8221;. This style developed from the Qawwali, from Sufi music with Muslim influence in the 17th century at the court of Mohammed Shah Rangile (1719-1748). The Khayal gives a musician free space for improvisation and possesses nevertheless a clear essential structure, either in the slow tempo, bada khyal or as chhota Khayl in a fast tempo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Gangubai is well-known for she interpreted the Khayal in slow tempo, note for note which is the substantial characteristic of the <a class="zem_slink" title="Kirana gharana" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirana_gharana" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Kirana Gharana</a>, one of India&#8217;s music schools.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">With her musical tools Gangubai could still give her last concert at the age of 93 on 12th March 2006. Although particularly from the loss of her daughter in 2004 she had to use a wheelchair and became in need of care for the last years of her impressive life.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">On 17th May 2009, two months before their dying the &#8220;voice of the tradition&#8221; inaugurated the &#8220;Naryan Academy OF <a class="zem_slink" title="Hindustani classical music" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hindustani_classical_music" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Hindustani Classical Music</a>&#8221; in Hubli… and under the roof of the Hangal Music Foundation a national memorial award will honor artists with outstanding earnings/services for <a class="zem_slink" title="Indian classical music" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_classical_music" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Indian Classical Music</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The <em>Padmavibhushan Dr. Gangubai Hangal Memorial National Award</em> will be assigned in 2010 to the outstanding singer <a class="zem_slink" title="Bhimsen Joshi" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhimsen_Joshi" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Pandit Bhimsen Joshi</a> (see right picture, 1st row). Bhimsen Joshi was introduced various times in IMC OnAir&#8217;s radio shows.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Dr. Gangubai Gangubai (5. März 1913 &#8211; 21. Juli 2009) ist eine Vertreterin der nordindischen Klassik. Diese Ausnahmesängerin kam uns in der Sendung &#8220;<a title="Raga Cds des Monats: Frauen in der indischen Klassik (Teil 1)" href="http://imcradiodotnet.wordpress.com/2009/11/09/raga-cds-des-monats-1109-frauen-in-der-indisch-klassischen-musik-teil1-16-11-2009-2200-cet/" target="_blank">Frauen in der indischen Klassik</a>&#8221; (Teil1) schon einmal zu Gehör, neben bedeutenden Vertreterinnen Nord- und Südindiens.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Den 100sten Geburtstag (5. März) des &#8220;<em>Vaters des Khayals</em>&#8220;, wie man Gangubai Hangal auch nannte, möchten wir zum Anlass nehmen, dieser herausragenden Künstlerpersönlichkeit einen Abend auf Radio FROzu widmen.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">In der geschichtlichen Bedeutung wir Gangubai als die einflussreichste Künstlerin gesehen, die Frauen zur Emanzipation im indischen Gesang verholfen hat. Neben vier Ehrendoktorwürden erhielt Gangubai 1971 &#8211; im Alter von 58 Jahren &#8211; den <a class="zem_slink" title="Padma Bhushan" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padma_Bhushan" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Padma Bhushan</a>, und erst 2002 den <a class="zem_slink" title="Padma Vibhushan" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Padma_Vibhushan" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Padma Vibhushan</a>, der zweithöchste zivile Orden Indiens. 2002 war auch das Jahr, in dem bei Gangubai Knochenkrebs diagnostiziert wurde, den sie nach drei Jahren Behandlung erfolgreich überwinden konnte.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Gangubai wurde 1913 im südindischen Bundesstaat, in Karnataka, geboren. Gangubai stammt aus einer einfachen Familie, deren frühere Generationen den Gangamats angehörten, der Kaste einfacher Bootsleute, die auch Ackerbau betreiben. Ihre Herkunft aus diesem sozial-einfachen Millieu brachte Gangubai in ihrer frühen Karriere die Ablehnung der orthodoxen Brahmanen ein. Es schickte sich nicht für Frauen, sich mit Künsten den Lebensunterhalt zu verdienen. Obgleich ihr Vater, Shri Nadgir und ihr Ehemann, Shri Gururao Kaulgi ebenfalls der Kaste der Brahmanen angehörten, herrschte in ihrer Familie das Standesbewusstsein vor, dass Frauen eine Zierde eines Mannes seien: Angavashtra. In der Wortbedeutung heisst dies in etwa: ein zusätzliches Kleidungsstück, das feingeistigen Männern als Statussymbol schmückt.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Die Familie von Gangubai zog 1928 von <a class="zem_slink" title="Dharwad" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dharwad" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Dharwad</a>, ihrem Geburtsort zu dem 20 Kilometer süd-östlich gelegenen <a class="zem_slink" title="Hubli" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubli" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Hubli</a>, damals wie heute ein kommerzielles Zentrum mit ca. 1.5 Millionen Einwohnern. Hubli blieb für Gangubai ihre Wahlheimat bis zu Ihrem Ableben am 21. Juli 2009.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Den künstlerischen Durchbruch erlangte Gangubai im Alter von 20 Jahren, mit einem Konzert im damaligen Bombay, 1933. Maßgeblichen Einfluss auf die gesanglichen Qualitäten von Gangubai waren neben ihrem musikalischen Talent die strenge Ausbildung, die sie 15 Jahre lang von Pandit Rambhau Kundgolkar erhielt, in Indien eher bekannt als Sawai Gandharv.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Sawai Gandharv, so Gangubai selbst, lehrte sie nicht mehr als vier Ragas. In ihrer strengen Ausbildung, die oft stundenlanges, monotones Üben einzelner Phrasierungen bedeutete, folgte ihre Lehrer dem Prinzip, wie man mit Geld umgehen sollte. Jede Note sollte so sparsam wie möglich eingesetzt werden. Dieser Regel blieb Gangubai in ihrer 80-jährigen Musikerkarriere stets treu. Während sie noch zu Beginn Lieder der leichten indischen Klassik, Bhajans und Thumris präsentierte, verschrieb sie sich später ganz dem <a class="zem_slink" title="Khyal" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khyal" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Khayal</a>, dem modernen Gesangsstil der nordindischen Klassik. Khyal, das bedeutet &#8220;Imagination&#8221;. Dieser Gesangsstil hat sich aus dem Qawwali, aus der Sufi-Musik mit muslimischer Prägung entwickelt, im 17ten Jahrundert am Hofe von Mohammed Shah Rangile (1719-1748). Der Khayal gibt dem Musiker viel Freiraum für Improvisation und besitzt dennoch eine klare Grundstruktur, entweder im langsamen Tempo, bada khyal oder als chhota Khayl, im schnellen Tempo.<br />
Gangubai ist dafür bekannt, dass sie den Khayal in langsamen Tempo ausführte, Note für Note, dem wesentlichen Merkmal der <a class="zem_slink" title="Kirana gharana" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirana_gharana" target="_blank" rel="wikipedia">Kirana Gharana</a>, eine der indischen Musikschulen.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Mit diesem Rüstzeug konnte Gangubai noch im Alter von 93 Jahren, am 12. März 2006 ihr letztes Konzert geben, obgleich sie, besonders von dem Verlust ihrer Tochter in 2004, gezeichnet, im Rollstuhl saß und für die letzten Jahre ihres Lebens pflegebedürftig wurde.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Am 17. Mai 2009, zwei Monate vor ihrem Ableben, hatte die &#8220;Stimme der Tradition&#8221; in Hubli die &#8220;Naryan Academy of Hindustani Classical Music&#8221; eingeweiht… und unter dem Dach der Hangal Music Foundation wird ein Gedächtnispreis, der Padmavibhushan Dr Gangubai Hangal Memorial National Award vergeben, als nationaler Award zur Auszeichnung von Künstlern mit herausragenden Verdiensten um die indisch-klassische Musik. In 2010 wird er an den herausragenden Sänger Pandit Bhimsen Joshi  (s. linkes Bild, 2. Reihe) vergeben. Bhimsen Joshi wurde diverse Male in unserer Sendung vorgestellt.</p>
