Ali Akbar Khan verstarb am Morgen des 18. Juni 2009, 87-jährig im Kreise seiner Familie, zuhause in San Anselmo, Kalifornien. Ali Akbar Khan war seit 2004 Dialysepatient. 2006 besuchte er zum letzten Male Indien für einen Auftritt beim Dover Lane Music Festival (Music Conference) in Kolkata…

Khansahib war eine Ausnahmeerscheinung am Firmament der indischen Musik. Er verstand die Musik als eine universelle Sprache. Ein musikalischer Klang berührt jedermann’s Herzen und Geist, Musik als Nahrung der Seele.
Die indischen Ragas verstand Ali Akbar Khan als einen Zustand der zeitlosen Ewigkeit, in die das Leben mit seinen kurzen Momenten eingebettet ist. In einem Interview mit Gautam Chatterjee der indischen Tageszeitung The Hindu, in der Ausgabe vom 17. Februar 2006 beschreibt Khansahib dies wie folgt:
„Die Glückseligkeit, die Freude eines Ragas erfährt man, wenn man dafür stirbt. Der Tod ist die Voraussetzung für dieses Glück. Für einen Raga leben wir, und wir sterben dafür. Das ist das ganze Geheimnis, um das es in der Lehrer-Schüler-Beziehung, Guru-Shishya-Parampara geht.
Die musikalische, die emotionale Wirkung eines Ragas entsteht aus dem Verständnis für den zeitlichen Zwischenraum – zwischen den Noten. Auf einer Note für einen Moment zu verharren, ist, als würde man tief einatmen, um zu verstehen, dass die Pause zwischen den nächsten zwei Noten dem Ein- und Ausatmen gilt. Von einer Note zur nächsten zu wandern, ist schwierig genug, aber dies mit einer Pause, einer Unterbrechung zu gestalten, ist nahezu unmöglich. Es mag nur gelingen, wenn man sich dieser Aufgabe ein ganzes Leben lang hingibt.“
Wie steht es um das unschätzbare Vermächtnis von Ali Akbar Khan ? – Khansahib hinterlässt nach drei Ehen sieben Söhne und 4 Töchter. Sein ältester Sohn Aaashish Khan ist ein renommierter Sarod-Spieler, zwei weitere Söhne, Alam und Malik spielen gleichfalls das Instrument ihres Vater. Die Familie Khan fühlen sich der Aufgabe verpflichtet, das Ali Akbar College for Music und die Ali Akbar Khan Bibliothek weiterzuführen.
Ali Akbar Khan hinterlässt uns einen unermesslichen Fundus an Audiodokumenten. Seit 2007 werden mit Fördermitteln mehr als 1000 Konzerte mit 1500 Stunden Spielzeit und ca. 6000 dokumentierte Unterrichtsstunden für den Aufbau einer digitalen Bibliothek aufbereitet. Bis heute sind davon ca. 2000 Stunden Audiomaterial archiviert.

In the press release of 22nd November 2011 it was announced that the promotion initiative IMC – India meets Classic will go ‘onair’ with a new radio format, internationally. “Thought Experiment(s)” will be aired from 22th Dec. on as English format in the sense of a medial continuation of the “project of Enlightenment” (details here).
The introductory premiere is given the topic “The Concept of Culture” and will be broadcasted uniquely as German format to introduce “Thought Experiment(s)” to the German audience, too. The 1st topic illuminates an outline of the relationship between culture and civilization, with reference to Immanuel Kant‘s sense orientation, cultural symbolic language and cultural regions.

In der Pressemitteilung vom November 2011 wurde angekündigt, dass die Förderinitiative IMC – India meets Classic mit dem neuen englisch-sprachigen Radioformat “GedankenExperiment(e)” ab 22.12.2011 (@ radio multicult.fm, Berlin) internatoinal auf Sendung gehen wird, im Sinne einer medialen Fortführung des “Projektes der Aufklärung” (Details hier).
Heute wird dieses Format auch den HörerInnen von Tide Radio in Hamburg in der deutschen Fassung vorgestellt.
